Replacing the screen on your HP Chromebook 11 G9 EE
Getting ready
Get everything ready first
A crack, lines or marks on the screen? A suitable new screen can make working comfortable again. Below, you can see how to replace your Chromebook's screen.
For your HP G9 EE
Check the full model on the underside of your Chromebook. Use the button to view parts in the shop.
The standard HP Chromebook 11 G9 EE. These steps do not apply to the 11MK G9 EE, an x360 or a Fortis. The illustrations come from HP's service manual for this model. There is no photo for shutting down: no suitable model-specific photo is included for that step.
What you need
- A suitable screen for your Chromebook
- A suitable small Phillips screwdriver
- A thin plastic tool for releasing the clips
- A soft cloth and a tray to keep screws organised by length
- An antistatic mat and wrist strap
- A plastic keyboard-release tool and, if needed, suitable replacement thermal material
Before you start
Work on a sturdy table with antistatic protection. Keep the screws in order and separate different lengths. The plugs and locks are small: work slowly and without force.
Is the battery swollen, damaged or unusually warm? Stop using the Chromebook and do not try to pry the battery out. Have a repair professional replace it.
Disconnect the battery first
Shut the Chromebook down completely and disconnect the charger. On this HP, first open the top cover to reach the battery connector. Always disconnect that connector before continuing the repair. Reconnect the battery only once the part and other cables are in place.
Step by step
How to replace the screen
Take your time. Is something stuck? Check the clips, cables and screws before continuing.
Shut the Chromebook down completely
Save your work, shut the Chromebook down completely and unplug the charger. Also remove any USB devices and memory card. Place a soft cloth on a sturdy table.
Simply closing the lid is not enough. Fully shut down the Chromebook.
Remove the six screws
Close the lid and place the Chromebook upside down on the cloth. Remove the two 8.5 mm screws and the four 6.9 mm screws. Keep the two lengths separate.

Open the Chromebook and rest the back of the screen on the soft cloth. Use a suitable plastic keyboard-release tool in the two rear screw holes to gently release the back edge of the top cover. Do not use a sharp metal point.
Place the Chromebook back on its underside. Lift the rear edge of the top cover only as far as the cables allow. Support it, open the keyboard and touchpad cable locks and slide the cables out. Put the top cover aside.
Does the cover remain stuck? Check the screws and clips. Do not keep pushing if considerable force is needed.

Find the cable between the battery and motherboard. Carefully release the protective cover or fixing tape at the plug. Holding the plug housing, slide it straight out of its connector in the direction of the cable. Leave the cable clear of the connector.
Do not pull the wires or lift the connector on the motherboard. The battery remains disconnected until the part and other cables are back in place.

Open the screen and support it properly. Detach the bezel: top first, then sides and bottom. Remove the bezel. Also detach its separate hinge cover and set both parts aside.

Remove the broad 2.3 mm screw from the Wi-Fi bracket and remove the bracket. Record which antenna cable connects to Main and which to Aux. Lift the antenna connectors straight up by their heads; do not pull the cables.
Disconnect the camera/microphone cable and display cable from the motherboard. Open any locking mechanisms first. Carefully release these cables and the antenna cables from the clips and guides near the hinges.
Leave the battery connector disconnected. Record the cable route so you can return everything to the same positions later.

Support the display lid on the soft cloth and also hold the casing. Remove the six broad 3.0 mm hinge screws and the six 2.8 mm screws from the hinge brackets. Keep the two groups separate.
Release the cables from the hinge sections. Carefully lift the casing until the hinges and brackets are completely detached from the display lid. Then slide the casing forward and place it on the cloth.
Do not leave the display or casing hanging from a hinge or cable. This is a precise step; do not force anything.

Release the display cable from the clips and cable channel in the lid. Carefully remove the panel section from the lid and lay it face down on a clean, soft cloth.
Release the grounding tape and adhesive strip beside the display cable. Open any locking tab and slide the display connector straight out of its socket. Keep the cable and tape for the new panel.

Check that the panel and connection match your exact version. For a touchscreen, use the corresponding touchscreen version. Connect the existing, undamaged display cable to the new panel. Refit the locking mechanism, adhesive strip and grounding tape.
Refit the panel section in the display lid. Route the cable through the same clips and channel. Check that it lies flat and is not trapped under the panel anywhere.
Refit the casing and hinges
Bring the casing back to the display lid and position the hinges and hinge brackets fully on their original mounting points. Support both parts while securing them.
Refit the six broad 3.0 mm screws and six 2.8 mm screws in their original positions. Route the display, camera and antenna cables through the original hinge openings and clips. Check that the display can move without pulling or pinching a cable.
Reconnect the display connections
Connect the display cable and camera/microphone cable to the motherboard and close the locking mechanisms. Press the antenna connectors straight down onto their original Main and Aux connections. Refit the Wi-Fi bracket with the broad 2.3 mm screw.
Refit the hinge cover and bezel. Check all cable routes and clips before continuing. Leave the battery disconnected for now.
Carefully close the Chromebook
Check that the part is secured, cables are in their guides and no loose screws have been left inside. Also check the thermal material between the top cover and motherboard. Keep it clean and in its original position. Replace damaged material with the correct HP material of the same shape and thickness before refitting the top cover.
Support the top cover above the housing. Insert the keyboard and touchpad cables straight and fully into their connectors and close the locks. Replace the protective cover. Make sure the top cover is not hanging by its cables.
Reconnect the battery plug once the other connections are complete, and replace the fixing tape or protective cover. Lower the top cover, press the clips around the edge into place and check that no cable is trapped. Close the lid and return the screws to their original positions.
Tighten screws without applying extra force. Switch on the Chromebook only once the housing is closed.

Original positions of the thermal material. Illustration: HP, HP Chromebook 11 G9 EE. Check that everything works
Turn on the Chromebook and view a light and a dark page. Check that the picture is clearly visible everywhere. Gently move the screen to see whether the picture remains stable. Did your Chromebook have a touchscreen and have you replaced it? Also check tapping and swiping in several places. On the G9, also check Wi-Fi, the camera and microphone, because these connections were disconnected for the repair.
Need to check another connection? Shut the Chromebook down completely again, disconnect the charger and disconnect the battery connector first.

Frequently asked questions
Practical answers before you start.
Does a black screen always need replacing?
No. A depleted battery or another fault can also be the cause. First check whether the Chromebook turns on. If unsure, have the cause investigated before ordering a screen.
Will touch still work with the new screen?
Did your Chromebook have a touchscreen? Choose a suitable replacement touchscreen for that version. A non-touch screen does not turn a Chromebook into a touchscreen model or replace that function.
Will my files and settings be preserved?
You do not need to erase or reset the Chromebook for this repair. Save your work before starting. Replacing this part does not require a reset.
My Chromebook looks different inside. What should I do?
Check the full model on the underside. Versions with 11A, 11MK, x360 or Fortis may be built differently. Follow these steps only if your version matches. If you are unsure, have Rmaatjes carry out the repair.
Would you prefer us to repair it?
Prefer not to do the repair yourself? Rmaatjes can replace the screen for you so you can use the Chromebook again.
